Hosts against the high flying Argentina

So here it is match worth of a final itself. Hosts Germany vs. high flying Argentina, repeat of Italia’ 90 final. This match has everything a host team which is in form upto against a team which probably has played best football so far in this competition. Unlike cricket, in football being host seems to help the teams previous world cups are pretty much support this theory. But on paper Argentina have a slight edge because of their depth in squad and their playing style. Though they were exposed by Mexico and I am sure Juergen Klinsmann must have studied that match, each second of it. Another thing which gives Argentina the edge is Germany’s weak links which are their center backs and I am sure Argentina will definitely try to exploit the weakness.

So lets see if hosts can ride on the football fever which has gripped the country and repeat Italia’ 90. oh just saw footage of Argentinean squad hahaha each and everyone was dancing, singing and were banging bus floor. So lets now move to Berlin and witness one of the match of the tournament.

Spanish Commentators

One thing I forgot to mention during the Spain France match was the commentary we were getting I think those are BBC guys listening to them since 94, so anyways in the room next to them were Spanish commentators and man were they making noise or what? hahahaha we could hear them loud, and even this English guy mentioned them atleast two three times. Hahaha they were getting excited even when Spain got throw ins and hahaha at the time of Goal they had gone nuts. And at half time they were singing hehehe, it was pure entertainment though they had gone quiet when France scored.

Spain dream evaporates

Spain have lived up to their reputation of losing out in big tournaments and frankly this time they had a huge chance to go a lot further. I even had a belief that they can go on and beat Brazil. But it was Vieira inspired France who came on top against all odds. Match started off with both teams creating chances and outing pressure. But it was France who were creating more clear cut chances and had more possession in attacking third. In 23rd minute Henry’s perfect cross went past inches close to Vieira’s stretched leg. France had given the warning; they were here to win it.

But it was Spain who got the lead in 28th minute when Pablo was brought down by Thuram inside the box and David Villa converted from the spot. Match was evenly poised and France who were always threatening to break the offside trap were eventually successful when Ribery broke free and after rounding the goalkeeper he put the ball in.

Second half started slowly with ball mostly in midfield and defense dominating but there was a twist in the tale, in 82nd minute Henry was brought down by Puyol and Zidane’s free kick was headed into the net by Vieira. Spain were stunned and France were over the moon. Nobody in their wildest dreams have thought that France who struggled so bad in round games will be on the verge of Quarter final place instead of Spain. Spain started looking for the equalizer and that gave France another break which Zidane as cool as cucumber converted and 3-1 France.

This was one of the shocks of the tournament, Spain started so strongly with four – nil thrashing of Ukraine and look at the irony Ukraine are in Quarters and Spain not. Today they were simply not able to find the answers and they couldn’t show the same fluency which they did early in the tournament. Sad end for Spain and France well I doubt they can be much threat to Brazil.

Ghana you have made us all proud

So Brazil keep their record intact of not conceding a goal against an African side in World cup, a very professional performance by Brazil which saw them win by 3 goals to nil, the score line which I believe doesn’t do justice to Ghana’s performance.

Brazil started strongly when Ronaldo scored early after breaking an offside trap. And in the process scored the most number of goals by any player in world cups combined, amazing. Ghana then settled well and played great football putting brazil in lot of pressure. They should have gone forward twice idlest, first in 35th minute when Asamoah Gyan should have scored after a mistake by Brazilian defense and then a very bad luck for John Mensah when in 42nd minute his header from a corner hit Dida’s foot rather then other way around. If that would have gone in I am sure match would have exploded and it would have been a thriller but unfortunately in this world cup fairy tales are far and few.

But when Brazil scored the second (controversially) and it seemed all over for Ghana. Their coach was sent off in half time for protesting over the goal but they were still searching for one goal to give them any chance before Brazil sealed off with a peach of a goal. Ok I should finish this now, being writing it since hour with break after every minute , grrrrrrrrr.

Ghana played a wonderful tournament they made many new fans and delighted us all with their breathtaking though broke my heart with a win on Czechs. They will be ruining their missed opportunities and huge amount of bookings, I hope they work on both of them and be consistent in their performance.

Penalty shootout drama

There is no worst heartbreaker than a penalty shootout exit (ask Italians) and that’s what Switzerland experienced last night. Match ended nil – nil and then a horrible display of penalties by Swiss saw them out just after six penalties were taken.

Ukraine were joyful, Swiss were destroyed. Tears of joy and sadness real contrasting scenes. Most dramatic story was Ukraine’s coach couldn’t take the drama of penalty shootout, he went in dressing room and was later informed of his team triumph. They even showed him taking tablet so I guess he is a heart patient or something. So Ukraine now go and play Italy both will fancy their chances to reach the semi finals.

Swiss vs. Ukraine

As expected it was a dull and cautious game, waiting for a goal which should open up the game. Now it is in extra time and still no signs of goal maybe one will be enough.

Lucky Italians

Tight match

Its half time in Kaiserlautern with both teams locked at nil nil. Though Italians could have been front only if Luca Toni was bit more lucky or not clumsy for some. But highly intense match nevertheless and even Aussies had couple of good chances. Italians will have to be more pressing in midfield and bit more creative in 18 yard box if they want to progress into Quarterfinals. Let us wait and see what happens.

Azzurri vs. Socceroos

Another tough test for Azzurri, on paper it would seem they are out right favorites to win this and they should, but it won’t be easy and there are reasons to it. First of all Australian style of play is what Azzurri don’t prefer at all. Australians hit hard on counter, have pace and they never give up. Plus their coach is the one who masterminded Italians fall in Korea-Japan 2002. He can very well do it here too. Good thing Italians are wary of threat and they are no way underestimating their opponents but they will be nervous (but when Italians are not :P). Anyhow I would put 60-40 for the Azzurri and unless they get a huge lead match will not be over till the end.

Australia: Harry Kewell, Mark Viduka and Marco Bresciano

Italians: Andrea Pirlo, Gilardino and Zambrotta.

Goodbye Orange

Scenes of joy and pain, Portugal are through and Holland are out. But this match will be remembered for the bookings and sending offs. Sixteen yellow cards and four red cards, unimaginable. At the end of the match there were some highly emotional scenes. Ruud Van Nistelrooij clapping for the fans it might be the last time he would feature in world cup and maybe for Dutch team too. Portuguese players along with coach dancing :). But sweetest part was club mates consoling each other after the match.

For Dutch they were unlucky but yea missed many chances enough to atleast score two. So goodbye Orange it is always fascinating to watch when their fans fill the stadium but I guess now it will be in Euro 2008.

Rain of Yellow and Red cards

What the hell is going on, a yellow card a minute and Deco is off second yellow for him and he is off. Referee has lost it and this is one of the darkest match as far as discipline is concerned. So much drama, enough for one whole season. God bless both these teams. I am sure England is most delighted right now either of the team who makes it will almost without their key players.

Boulahrouz is off

Match is now in its 4th gear, some fantastic end to end football and from nowhere it looks like Portugal are one man down. In fact it has kind of helped the match , grin. Though I cant understand Dutch long shooting tactics, it is just breaking their momentum.

Ohhhhh drama Khalid Boulahrouz elbows Figo and he has been sent off for second booking now we are again ten men aside and it seems like Dutch are going out. And a fight breaks out too its all happening here in Franken-Stadion, according to my friend Sidz referee must be thinking "what the hell have i gotten myself into here?" hehe drama here.

Portugal one man down

Costinha is off after second booking and this could have heavy bearing on the match, now Portugal will play full second half with one man less. But Dutch must thank Van Der Sar for keeping them in match when he saved brilliantly a close range shot from Pauleta. Second half could very well be one side affair.

Cristiano Ronaldo injured

Cristiano Ronaldo was holding his tears when he was substituted in 34th minute because on in injury. It seems he feels that it is a serious one and even if Portugal wins he may not be able to participate, we shall wait.

Portugal and Holland

Match of heavyweights Portugal and Holland is underway right now. Started slowly but it now is getting momentum. Portugal seems to be more in control they are looking the better of two sides.

And just when I was writing these lines Maniche has given Portugal the lead, Dutch are now one goal down and it looks like it will be one exciting match in next 65 minutes or so.

England Through

So England did manage to hold on to their one goal lead provided by Beckham. Full praise to Ecuador who played their heart out and gave England a tough time.

Beckham’s magic

David Beckham have produced a masterpiece of free kick to give England the lead. It was typical Beckham free kick and the skipper has given his side the lead, what a man!!!!

England frustrated

Good start by Ecuador against England they have frustrated their opponents and hardly let them have any shot on goal. In fact it was Ecuador who had the best chance of the half when John Terry uncharacteristically headed one back and Carlos Tenorio was onto it in a flash and unleashed a fearful strike only for Ashley Cole to intercept it and save England’s blues. England should have been one goal down by then.

England on the other hand were trying to feed long balls to Rooney and almost all failed. They will need to come up with something better in second half if they want to progress in the finals.

Argentina takes the lead

If ever you wanted to witness a perfect goal that would be potentially a match winner watch the goal just scored Maxi Rodriguez to give Argentina a goal advantage in extra time. What a goal, took the ball on his chest and hit one thunderous shot on volley I doubt any keeper in the world have saved it.

Argentina are on their way to meet Germany in quarter finals. And why the hell I didnt pick him in my fantasy team and instead went for RIQUELME Juan grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr I am mad at myself

PS: Argentina have held on to their lead and now will meet Germany in Quater finals, one heck of a match it will be.

Mexico holding Argentina

Ok this is it, first 90 minutes has just ended with both teams locked on at 1 – 1 and frankly there is very little to separate between the two. Full credit to Mexico they have fought every inch of the field and have matched Argentina’s every move. We have one absorbing extra time coming up, don’t miss it.

Frankly Argentina have looked very ineffective in this match so far and will require some inspiration from Lionel Messi to see them through.

Argentina in pressure

Ok there is one thing confirmed, there are no favorites no matter how good you are playing how many stars you have there is no easy ride. We were all expecting Argentina to decimate Mexico but match has started in completely opposite manner. It was Mexico who stunned Argentina in just 6 minutes by taking the lead through their skipper Rafael Marquez. No body seemed to believe what had happened. But Argentina soon equalized with Hernan Crespo. But match has been extremely entertaining and Mexico are looking very good and have been threatening Argentinean goal in fact they have two more shots than their opponents. This will give Germany big heart now they know Argentina is not invincible.

Hosts are through

Ok after the penalty miss there was no steam left in Sweden’s attack in fact Germany could have scored couple of goals more particularly Michael Ballack was unlucky with his couple of shots saved brilliantly by Andreas Isaksson. Anyways it ended with same score and the hosts are through to quarters where they will face either Argentina or Mexico.

Not Sweden day

What could go more wrong when you are 2 nil down within just 15 minutes, you concede another one yea well that too but more worst when one of your defender is sent off. Teddy Lucic was sent off in 35th minute with second booking though second one was a controversial one I doubt it deserved a yellow card (even a foul for some)but the Brazilian referee was convinced in fact he was carrying a huge smile when he sent him off. But the time he took to produce the card it gave an impression that pressure got the best of him. Unlucky situation for Swedes who are goals down and one man down, lets see if they can produce a comeback in second half.

A loud applause for Andreas Isaksson the Swedish goal keeper who has kept his side in the game with three fabulous of saves and keeping the hopes alive.

Oh a penalty for swedes they have a chance to come back in game. This very much looks like the semi final between Italy and Buglaria when Baggio gave italians two goals lead but Bulgaria came back with a penalty.

NOoooooooooooo Larsson has misssed it, he blows it up. What a miss, this could be end now for Swedes.

Germany on song

A devastating start by Germans in their round two game against Sweden. In just 12 minutes they were 2 nil ahead and Sweden have no clue whatsoever what is happening to them. It is other striker Podolski who has scored both the goals. Swedish defense is completely out of synch right now but they have created some strong chances and are still very much in the game.

Battle of Knock Out begins

Muhahaha now the fun part begins the knock out stage and nothing is better than watching hosts Germany battling it out against Swedes. What a match in prospect. Sweden with the kind of attack they have can never ever be under estimated. Germany will definitely be under pressure and only an early goal will settle their nerves though they can’t relax since Sweden are known for their coming back abilities. It will be a battle of midfield and it will be the midfield which will win the game for any side.

For the second game I am pretty confident Argentina will nail Mexico and advance to the quarters where they will face winner of the first game.

Les Bleus finally make it

So Les bleus have finally made it to round of 16, after starting nervously and somehow being unlucky against Togo they got their deserved goals in second half. And since Swiss won two nil against South Korea the result ensured that France are through but will face a very stiff challenge against Spain. In earlier matches both Ukraine and Spain had comfortably easy wins against their respective Asian opponents. Spain playing with a reserve team showed how much depth they have in their squad, while Ukraine I must say were bit lucky in getting that penalty decision which Shevchenko converted with ease for a historic goal.

End of cup for Owen

Old news but had to post it anyway, so the fears have been confirmed Michael Owen is out of the world cup infact he will be most probably out for quite a few months. Owen tore a ligament just within couple of minutes in the match against Sweden. Injury is a blow to England who went to the finals with just four strikers and one of them being Wayne Rooney who has just recovered.

Azzurri are through but I am sad for Czechs

Ok I guess we can’t have everything we wish for. Italy are through which makes me extremely delighted but Czech republic are out, a sad end to what could have been a very promising campaign. Italians came out stronger in second half perhaps this time they wanted to take full advantage of having one man more and not falter under pressure. Czechs specially Nedved (he deserves a whole post) tried their heart out but just couldn’t get that one goal and in the end conceded a late one. Filippo Inzaghi coming as a substitute scored the second for Azzurri though he should have scored one earlier too. So Italy are through and will now face Australia who once again showed tremendous fighting skills and twice came back from behind to earn a draw against Croatia thus creating a history by entering in round of sixteen. Harry kewell was finally able to score a goal but at what an important time it was. Azzurri must not take Australia lightly they gave Brazilians lots of troubles, they come very hard and have a lot of fluency in their attacking it will be one tight match. Specially kewell and Bresciano combine very well and will be a threat.

But even a draw for Czech would not have been enough for them to qualify because in the other match Ghana had beaten USA by two goals to one though there have been some questions raised on the issue of penalty which gave them the winner. But a Great result for Ghana finally one team has been able to keep African flag flying high though they will be up against Brazil who seem to be picking up their game quite nicely. Brazil thrashed Japan 4-1 thanks to a very professional performance in which Ronaldo scored twice and hence he equals the record of highest number of goals scored by any player in world cup finals.

So as it stands Italy plays Australia and Brazil will battle against Ghana, couple of very interesting matches.

Mixed emotions at the end of first half

Oh well I am having mixed emotions right now, you people might remember though Italians are my favorites but Czech are very close too and I simply want both into round two and was cherishing a round 2 battle between Czech and Brazil. Though that seems like a remote possibility now. Italians from an unlikely source Marco Materazzi (who came on in place of Alessandro Nesta who captured a groin injury) went ahead from a corner which from the replays showed that it should not have been a corner in first place. Then Czech Republic went further in trouble when Jan polak picked two yellow cards with two clumsiest of tackles and was sent off. Though Czech were more impressive of the two teams creating more chances and looked likely to score goals but they failed to capitalize from theie chances. Italians on the other hand were very untidy giving away possession in midfield or in Czech half and getting tackled at important places. Pavel nedved looked so far the most impressive of the player, lets see if he can inspire his team to a draw or a win.

Ghana are on their way to round 2 as they are leading US with 2 goals to one. It was Ghana who went ahead in first half but US equalized in 43rd minute only to go down again in injury time with a penalty. So far as it stands it is Italy and Ghana who are going through to round 2. Lets see what second half has in store for us.

Group D massive game begins

Oh well a highly anticipated match turned out to be dull nil nil draw. Argentina and Dutch both played out a draw but on the other end Côte D'ivoire and Serbia and Montenegro played out one of the thriller match of the tournament. Côte D'ivoire came out from behind to win 3-2. Best scenes were when Côte D'ivoire’s skipper scored the winning goal from the penalty spot, his own goal keeper had his face towards the crowd praying and only crowd reaction told him it was the goal. A memorable victory for Côte D'ivoire they played absolutely thrilling football but were disappointing in finishing and wasted too many chances. So Argentina and Holland advance and they will face Mexico and Portugal respectively.

Ok the most tensed time for me is about to begin in next five minutes Italy and Czech republic will start their decider and it is such a complicated situation that any two of the four teams can qualify. And news is Milan Baros is playing but Luca Toni has been dropped. So Lippi going with a strong midfield which I think was needed. So here we go Group D about to conclude.

Argentina and Holland both off to slow start

The much awaited clash of Argentina vs. Holland is underway and it is half time in Frankfurt. Both teams are looking cautious with slow build ups and there isn’t much pace in Argentinean game as it was against Serbia and Montenegro maybe because they are resting some of the key players or maybe due to the fact they are giving Holland some respect. Though it was Argentina who could have been ahead twice atleast. Once it was Dutch defender’s mistake whose flick hit the crossbar and at another point a shot went inches past the goal, Van der san was beaten there. Holland have their chance too when Dirk kyut’s shot was saved by Roberto Abbondanzieri though he should have passed the ball to his team mate rather than trying from a difficult angle. This game definitely needs a goal to spark things up.

In the other match Serbia and Montenegro started off brilliantly with two goals in two minutes though I must say the defending in both occasions was horrendous to say the least. Côte D'ivoire hit back strongly and got one goal back in 37th minute with a penalty when Albert nadj was sent off with second booking, second one was received when he so idiotically handled the ball inside his own box it seemed he forgot for a moment that he is playing soccer and thought of it as a Volley ball game. Côte D'ivoire though enjoyed above 65% of the possession but failed to equalize, conditions aren’t easier either in Munich since it was raining and players were struggling on wet pitch. But the first half was full of events according to the commentator it had events enough for a season :D. Though my stupid broadcasters have ruined any chance to view any highlights when they started telecasting commercials after the break :(. I know I know they get paid for this but they have one other channel for this and everyone knows apart from the supporters of playing nations hardly anyone would be watching this one so highlights should have been shown, maybe they will after the match but who will watch it then :P. anyhow second half has started and me going to watch the rest of the match now.

Portugal looking strong

Group D finished as expected with Portugal looking strong after finishing with all nine points. Their almost reserved team looked pretty good and shows the depth in their squad though they will be most probably playing Holland in round 2 and it won’t be easy.

Iran finally managed a point when they too came from behind to draw against Angola. Though a disappointing campaign for Iran who atleast would have liked atleast a draw against Mexico and a win against Angola. Angola’s result just summed up disappointing challenge by African teams in this cup apart from Ghana hardly any other team lived up to the challenge and just goes to show though they have individual talents they fail to capitalize as a team, something which requires work.

So now Portugal and Mexico both must be watching Argentina vs. Holland match with keen interest since both of them will be playing one team from this match.

Group A and B concluded

Ok so England have avoided Germany in round 2 and now will face Ecuador who were thrashed 3-nil by the hosts. It was one professional performance by Germany and they didn’t let Ecuador take hold of the game at any second. Klose netted twice and Podolski finally got his first. Michael Ballack was in fine form and Germany are shaping into one strong unit.

Sweden tried hard but they might be facing elimination in second round when they will face Germany though let me tell you Sweden will come hard and wont go down easily it would be one cracker of a match.

Poland finally got a win in world cup when they came from behind to beat Costa Rica 2-1. It was Batosz Bosacki who got both the goals for Poland after Ronald Gomez's strong free kick gave Costa Ricans the lead.

Paraguay also managed their first win of the tournament, drawn in a tough group this was the only match they were expected to win and even this wasn’t the easiest of matches. Trinidad and Tobago gave them a hard time but unfortunately conceded an own goal and couldn’t capitalize on their chances.

So it will be England vs. Ecuador and Germany vs. Sweden.

England retake the lead

Yes its the Liverpool hero Stephen Gerrard who has just given England the vital lead when they all seemed losing their track in the game. Sweden looked like they might take the lead but it is England who are upfront Thanks to Gerrard header.

Oh no Sweden have equalized this is some game, Its Larsson whos little flick has brought Sweden back in this match WHAT A GAME...

England and Sweden playing one hell of a game

Its half time at Cologne and England are playing their best soccer of the world cup so far. Joe Cole is giving Swedish defense all kinds of trouble from left flank with his menacing dribbling and crosses so far Sweden have not able to stop him. And right now England are one nil up and who’s the goal scorer? Yes you guessed it right Joe Cole. It was one hell of a goal, he stopped the ball with his chest and while it was coming down he hit a perfect dipping shot and the off line Swedish goalkeeper was beaten. David Beckham, Owen Hargreaves and Frank Lampard are having an excellent game too with Lampard again trying four shots at goal but so far with no success. Wayne Rooney has been inspirational so far and his presence has made a difference to the English team. Only bad news for England is Michael Owen crawled off the pitch with a twisted knee and he will have a scan tomorrow.

Sweden seemed totally clueless in the first half and had zero shots on goal.

Ok here is an update Sweden have just equalized , yes they are back in the world cup with Marcus Allback goal from the corner and match is alive again. Sweden are back with bang in this game just minutes after scoring the goal they have hit the cross bar with yet another corner. England looking shaky here. And by the time I get the chance to upload another cross bar by Sweden this game is turning on its head.

Last phase in group matches begin

Nerve wrecking for some, do or die for some and chance to improve more for some. These next four days are vitally important. These days might well decide which team will go much further and which might get eliminated in next couple of rounds or even in this. Favourites like France, Italy and Czech Republic are not even sure if they will make it to round two and teams like Brazil, England and Netherlands are looking for a lot better game.

Today Group A and B will conclude. Nothing much in Group A, apart from Germany and Ecuador will play to decide who finishes top of the group which mind you has significance importance for the later rounds. And only Germany’s win will take them to the top a draw or a defeat will keep them at second place and that will be a shocker.

Ultimate rivals in football Sweden and England will battle out for first place in Group B, a win for any one of them will secure them the first position and avoid the clash with Germany. A draw will be enough for England but if Sweden lose and Trinidad and Tobago give a whopping to Paraguay (big if) then it is bye bye Sweden. But there is more to Sweden vs. England match then just table position, remember England have not able beat Sweden since 34 years and Sven-Goran Eriksson being the Swede adds an extra spice to the contest so look forward for an exhilarating contest.

Spain dominating

Yesterday went to Dubai to meet a very old friend of mine so couldn’t watch any match. But great result for Swiss and not so great for France who will now have to beat Togo and hope that there is no draw in the other match.

Ukraine got their act back with 4 nil drubbing of Saudia Arabia, good to see Shevchenko on the score sheet too. Saudia are almost out of this competition unless they receive a divine help and thrash Spain and Tunisia and Ukraine play out a draw :P.

Spain on the other hand look in solid form though they were made to work hard by a battling Tunisia side. Tunisia took the lead in first half and maintained it till the end but then Spain hit back in style and scored three in last twenty minutes to stun Tunisia. Fernando Torres scored twice and Raul scored the equalizer. Spain are looking in top form this time, lets see if they improve on their previous achievements.

So this ends the Set 2 of round 1 matches and from today some very nerve wrecking matches are about to begin.

Brazil yet again disappointing, but France are in serious trouble

Sunday saw Brazil display yet another unconvincing performance against a very determined Australian side who had the world champions in trouble at lots of time. Though the match ended 2 nil for the Brazilians but in my opinion 2-1 would have been a fair result( some might say a draw would have been perfect). Good to see Ronaldinho showing his class again and Ronaldo getting in some form but it was Robinho who was more impressive and Brazil looked a different team up front when he came on.

For Socceroos Bresciano and Kewell were in menacing form, Kewell in particular should have scored when Dida dropped the ball in front of him and the Aussie’s winger instead of making it 1-1 hit his shot over the bar. But full credit to the Australians who didn’t take any pressure and were in positive frame and who knows maybe a bit of luck they might even have caused an upset. In the end Brazil’s power was too much to handle and substitute Fred sealed the game for the defending champions who now have progressed to round 2. Australia will now play against Croatia who early in the day blew up a perfect chance to achieve second spot in the group when they drew nil nil with Japan. Croatia missed a perfect opportunity when in 22nd minute Japanese goalkeeper made an excellent save from the spot. Minutes later they hit the cross bar. Both sides missed quite a few opportunities and game was largely disappointing and the result hasn’t left any one of them in a good position so all to play for on last day.

The shocker was yet to come, France one of the hot favorites were held to a draw in what was the surprise of the Cup. Koreans once again demonstrating their never say die approach and somehow got the equalizer and when they did the crowd (as commentator called it sea of red) went wild. Korean crowd is special and they always add an extra touch.

Though France were extremely unlucky when a clear goal was disallowed by the ref, though replays showed that ball had crossed the line and the goal should have been awarded. If that had been allowed I wonder what would have been the result. But France missed their opportunities too and a 1 nil advantage is never an advantage really. Now they have a tricky last game ahead against Togo but they will also depend on the result from the other match.

Frentic Saturday the 17th

First match on Saturday was no indication of what will happen in next two. Portugal dominated Iran to ease themselves for 2-nil victory and qualify for the second round and left Iran to reflect on a poor campaign. Portugal might have gone ahead in first half after creating some early chances but Iran failed to make an impact. In start of second half Iran played a much better game and it soon turned into an end to end contest. But it was Deco star of Portugal who broke the deadlock with 23 yard shot in top corner. For next fifteen minutes Iran battled hard for an equalizer which eluded them, though twice they came very close but once denied by the Goalkeeper and once the shot was just wide.

It was a dream come true for Ghana. First victory for the any debutants in Germany 2006, first victory for any African side in Germany 2006 and that too at the expense of Czechs who many termed as favorites to reach semis after their demolition of US. But football is a funny game and yesterdays result doesn’t matter. Infact it was Ghana who were on top from the start , scoring the fastest goal in this tourney so far just in 70 seconds , Czechs were shaken. Matthew Amoah and Appiah were in prime form and causing Czechs lots of problems who themselves had one decent chance when Poborsky hit one wide inside the box. But Czechs were clearly missing Jan Koller and Milan Baros as front line strikers. Second half had more pace to it and both teams were looking for a goal, Czech almost grabbed the equalizer when Pavel Nedved headed one in but offside whistle had been blown before. Ghana on other hand dramatically missed a penalty a chance which would have sealed the match. But finally in 82nd minute Muntari gave them the decisive lead with a 12 yard powerful shot which gave no chance to Peter Cech who I believe kept the Czechs well in the game with his miraculous saves though his team was disappointing while attacking and they just lost their way and gave way to nerves.

A wonderful win for Ghana their first entry in the World cup and they beat one of the favorites for Czechs they must forget this match and look forward to the game against Italians but still a big question hangs over their forward line.

Third match, the one of Azzurri vs. United States the one I have been waiting for. It was more of rugby than football(not soccer). Three free kicks in just inside two minutes for Italians was a clear cut indicator that US are in for an aggressive match and it really out off Italians from their plan. US seemed more like a dominating team enjoying more possession and keeping pressure on Italians. On the other side Italians were largely unimpressive and were hardly able to make any move. It seemed that American coach has got it tactically absolutely right and it stretched Italian’s midfield wide open. Against the run of play Azzurri got a free kick which Andrea Pirlo curled in and Gilardino’s diving header put Italians in front. This started a chain of bizarre events which made a mockery of game. First Zaccardo trying to clear a cross deflected the ball inside his own goal and US were back level and then De Rossi quite idiotically elbowed Brian McBride and was sent off straight away. Seeing his team down to ten men and out stretched Lippi brought Gennaro Gattuso in place of Totti(who had earlier received a yellow card) and the move almost paid off when Gattuso’s deflected shot went in but offside flag was on before it. The much anticipated Toni looked again very unimpressive and was conceding quiet a few offside decisions it seemed US had a plan against the two strikers and it was working fine. But just before the end of first half Pablo Mastroeni was sent off for a tackle on Pirlo and teams were back level on player’s numbers too.

Second half started in more dramatic fashion when Pope was sent off for second booking and it was felt that Azzurris will take full advantage of one man advantage and will seal the match but it seemed other way. Donovan was having an excellent game for Americans and all the time they kept pressure on the Italians. On the other hand it was Kesey Keller who made sure that Italians don’t go ahead with series of great saves from Del Piero who was brought in second half. The match finally without any more sending offs ended on 1-1 draw.

These results have thrown Group E wide open with all four teams have the possibility of advancing to the round 2, which makes the last day in this group pretty interesting and it also makes Ghana one of the favorites to end the group on top position if they can nail US and Italians either lose or draw to Czech. So many possibilities so much to play for. As for the Italians they will need to change their tactics a bit because with Totti almost in effective this formation doesn’t seem to work unless he can bring his magic back. For Czechs they need a striker from somewhere.

Argentina the Masters

Argentina taught everyone a footballing lesson by thrashing Serbia and Montenegro 6-0 in what was a feast of passing skills. Absolutely dream football. Argentineans are playing the kind of football which they used to in time of Maradona and looking in great shape to reach the finals. Another positive aspect was arrival of Messi and boy did he had an impact on the game one Goal created and one scored. Feel sorry for Serbia and Montenegro who were just the wrong team on the wrong day , frankly any team would have been blown away with such a performance and I am surely looking forward for more magic from Argetina.

In another match Dutch beat Ivory Coast which seriously should have ended 2-2, but Ivory Coast missed many chances and have themselves to be blamed for their exit.

In the last match Angola drew with Mexico for their first point in the finals, though I was again on highway while the match was going on.

Ecuador on High, England still searching and Sweden almost there

I was out for the weekend (friend’s place) so could not update. Thursday saw Ecuador thrashing Costa Rica 3-0 and guaranteeing their place in last 16 and closing out any mathematical window Poland had to qualify. Ecuador seems like a team which can cause an upset or two so watch out England and Sweden.

In match two England showed yet another disappointing effort but went on to win 2-0. Peter crouch who seemed like can never score broke the deadlock with Beckham’s cross and then Gerrard struck a thunderbolt to give England an unbeatable lead. But full credit or maybe not to Trinidad and Tobago that kept England on check and frustrated them for almost entire the match by keeping almost everyone behind the ball, a tactic which in my view doesn’t take a team anywhere. England have qualified for the second round and now will play against Sweden to determine who will end up on top, though even a draw is enough for England.

In the last game Sweden’s Freddie Ljungberg scored a late goal to earn three points against Paraguay and secured their place in second round. Sweden started in a positive fashion and created majority of chances though Paraguay were happy to sit back and hit on counter. Sweden should have scored atleast once in first half but failed. In second half Paraguay started strongly but Sweden proved to be a stronger side and it was Ljungberg who scored late with a header to Give Sweden three points from a match which was heading for a disappointing draw.

Domination, Thrill and Anxiety

If I had to describe yesterdays games in one word each , then I would choose these three words. Spain were dominant, right from the word go they were all over Ukraine giving them hardly any chance to move forward. On other hand Spain were creating chances and keeping Oleksandr Shovkovskyi (Ukraine’s Goal Keeper) in constant pressure. They scored quickly in 13th minute with a corner which was headed in by Xabi Alonso which could or should have been saved by the goal keeper or by the player standing on the post, ball just went between them. Soon Spain doubled their lead with David Villa’s free kick deflected off the defender and right into the net 2-0. Though that didn’t stop Spain from attacking(no sit back strategy even after two goals up) they kept up the pressure with Luis Garcia, Fernando Torres and David Villa (who btw had an outstanding game) creating more chances.

Start of second half was more disastrous for Ukraine, Torres was brought down inside the box and Vashchuk was sent off. Though replays showed the pull was outside the box and Ukraine were very very unlucky, I mean Ghana had a much stronger case against Italy. David Villa stepped up and made it 3-0 for Spain and match was all over. Ukraine had few chances of their own but failed to take advantage none of them falling to their talismanic man Shevchenko. Shevchenko was very disappointing in this game maybe because he was coming back from an injury and didn’t want to push much after conceding two goals. Spain have started very strongly and look in great shape specially the style of game they adopted which was very positive, though they were lucky with their goals but when you are positive you have luck with you too.

Now to the second match and it was a thriller, not really football of highest quality but nonetheless it was entertaining. It was the Arab derby and it lived upto its expectations. Tunisia went ahead with an acrobatic strike by Jaziri. But in second half Saudi Arabia started strong and were looked much better side soon they leveled with a wonderful move which in the end was ended in net by Al Kahtani, 1-1. Tunisia looked nothing like what they were in first half and Saudia’s coach made one decisive change bringing on the most their famous player Al Jaber who didn’t disappoint his coach when he gave Saudia the lead after they broke swiftly. It looked as if though Saudia will score all three points but there was more drama. Two minutes into the injury time and Tunisia leveled. Jaziri found space in the box and sent a perfect cross to Jaidi who sent a close range header inside and sending Tunisian team on the sky. It looks highly unlikely that any one these teams will advance to round two unless they one of them upsets Ukraine.

Hosts Germany became the first team to reach the last sixteen, but it didn’t come that easy. Poland who needed a win in this match started brilliantly and keeping Germans at bay and asking few questions the other end. German skipper Michael Ballack returned to the side but failed to impress. Germany should have been ahead atleast twice when once Klose missed a header and then Podolski missed a very straight forward chance. In second half German crowd became restless and signs of nervousness were visible , Germany were failing to break the deadlock and Poland it seemed were content with the nil - nil draw and adopted negative approach. In 75th minute Radaslow Sobolewski was sent off with second booking really a stupid challenge when you are already on one booking and which might have had cost his team the draw. Germany got the space they wanted and wave after wave of German’s attack were onto the Polish goal who somehow with some luck kept the clean sheet. Germany almost scored in 90th minute but were denied by the bar twice, first Klose’s header and then from the rebound Ballack’s kick. But their determination paid off in 91st minute Neuville the sub slid into convert the cross into a goal and took Germany in second round and broke Polish’s heart who I feel were responsible for this fall by sitting back and letting German assert pressure.

So this finishes first set of matches and of all the favorites Spain look in great shape with Argentina, Germany, Italy and Brazil all close. It would be interesting to see who picks the pace now.

Rusty Brazil

I wouldn’t have said that for any other team but only for Brazil because they have set such a high standard of football that the last night display can only be described as rusty. Any one can tell you that one goal advantage is never an advantage( Ask Japanese) and with little bit of luck and more skillful play Croats would have easily drawn. But a win is a win no matter how it comes in the end are the three points and I am sure this is just a beginning of what is to come. Though there were moments of magic, Ronaldinho weaving his way through three defenders and his magical touches, Roberto Carlos with this thunderbolt which must have given a serious sting on the fingers of Croats Goalkeeper and kaka brilliantly taken goal he hit it with the side of his boot and woah it flew fabulous. But the real disappointing ones were the two strikers who failed to leave any impact and were below par (which has resulted in yet again poor performance of my fantasy team :( ).

But all the credit to Croatia who hung on despite losing their captain through injury in first half and never looked like given up. They tried, they battled and they gave no respect to Brazilian’s reputation. If they continue with this kind of determination they should beat South Korea and advance to second round.

And yes the crowd it was just majestic all yellow and with Croats white and they were making heck of a noise must be some experience.

So today first set of matched will end and all teams would have played one game atleast by the end of the day. Its Spain vs. Ukraine in 20 minutes time.

South Korea Hit the Decisive Punch

South Korea needed a win in their first match to back up their astonishing success four years back and they did just that. Match had a similar status as that of Mexico and Iran both teams cannot afford to lose. But it was Togo who set off an early impression with typical African style of play. Mohammad Kader was the impressive and did cause trouble to Korean defense. And he got his team the early lead with a wonderful thigh stop and then firing in a low shot to the far corner Togo 1 nil.

In second half it looked Togo had forgotten that match is of 90 minutes they looked so non-interested and just sat back and allowed Korea to mount pressure. In 57th minute game took a turn Togo skipper was sent off with second booking and Lee Chun-Soo dipped a wonderfully taken free kick into the corner of the net , 1-1. It was all on the cards that South Korea will get a winner , question was when? And it could have been non better than Ahn Jung-Hwan(the guy who sank Italy with his goal in 2002) he found more than enough space and time to hit a dipping shot South Korea 2-1. Match killed there and it was over.

South Korea still don’t look good to qualify for the second round, (specially after Swiss and French drew 0-0) unless they beat one of them but for that they will need to tighten up their defense a lot, they gave too much space to Togo even when they were not pressing.

Frankly I don’t want to write about the game between France and Swiss, it was seriously not a game I would say most boring of all so far. There were hardly any chances and the ones which were there were blown away so immaturely as if we are witnessing third level clubs playing. I hope both of the teams improve their game otherwise non of them should goto next round.

And why the hell David Trezeguet wasn’t played, Louis Saha was totally ineffective.

Injuries Update

On Injuries front Serbia and Montenegro are down to 21 men when star defender Nemanja Vidic suffered a knee injury and has been ruled out of the championship. Serbia and Montenegro were already down to 22 men when the coach’s son pulled out of the squad before the tournament.

News doesn’t look good for Jan Koller who might miss all the group matches with the injury he picked against USA, this if true is a bad news for Czech republic because they needed him to be a target man for crosses coming from their strong midfield.

Mexico striker Jared Borgetti might also miss all the group matches with an injury he picked in their first match against Iran.

There is still no news on Rooney but chances are he might play the final group game against Sweden.

Azzurri Confident

Azzurri are off to a perfect start to their campaign for fourth world cup victory. Though they were tested hard by very energetic Ghanaian side who showed great pace in their counter attacks but were very disappointing in the box. Match started at an intense pace with both teams trying to get the early initiative and Italy came very close for an early lead when Luca toni failed to connect to a cross and Gilardino shot hit the post. Totti and Pirlo combined well to bring about chances for the Italians but all the moves lacked the final touch. For Ghana Essien and Asamoah were causing real havoc whenever they moved but they hardly threatened Buffon.

Totti seemed to be getting back to his touch with his slick touches and looked in control behind the two forwards. He caused a brilliant save from Ghanaian goalkeeper with his 25 meter thunderbolt. Italians looked creative from the set pieces and presence of Pirlo and Totti was evident. Toni though failed to score but came very close when he flicked the ball with his head to come in a position and then launched a thunderous shot which hit the cross bar and came back.

But the goal came in 40th minute when another short corner was played deliberately to Pirlo who hit a scorching shot which past through couple of players before cannoning into the corner.

Second half initially was all about Ghana who were trying hard to equalize pushed forward and had Italian defense in trouble at couple of times. Essien brought a wonderful save from Buffon. On the other end Kingston (Ghanaian Goalkeeper) must be given credit to keep his team in the match when he blocked Simone Perrotta’s shot in 67th minute. But as Azzurris sat down the inevitable happened, a mistake by Ghanaian’s defense and Iaquinta found himself having loads of space and he went pass through Kingston to seal Azzurri’s lead 2-0 match over.

Good performance by the Italians considering the pre-tournament controversy back in Italy and few of their players and plus coach being under the investigation. They always start nervously but good thing they started with a win that too with 2 goals difference. Another positive note was combination of Totti and Pirlo and how they served the two man forward. Toni was unlucky but Gilardino will have to improve or Iaquinta would be in starting line up. Defense as usual was rock solid with two back flanks moving forward to support the midfield. Things are looking good for the Azzurri but they will need some luck to reach the finals, the luck which has abandoned them since Baggio missed his penalty.

Confident start by Ghana but its hard to see them progressing to the second round with Czechs in such a good form, but they are very much capable to nail United States.

Czech Republic on a roll

Czech Republic have just decimated USA in first half at Gelsenkirchen. Two goals first by Jan koller with a thunderous header from a great cross by Grygera though the marking was very poor from the US defense. After this intial blow US seemed to settle down and were making few inroads and Claudio Reyna was unlucky when his shot hit inside of bar and came out. But that didn’t stop Czechs from attacking they were just simply marvelous while moving forward Nedved, Poborsky, Rosicky and Koller all combining well and were creating havoc in the attacking third. Then came the magic moment a wonderful move by Nedved and Rosicky which ended up Nedved’s cross coming back to Rosicky he took a moment and shoot the goal of the tournament. This guy is simply genius. Sad moment for Koller though he was carried off on a stretcher and probably it might end his world cup too. Sad for me too he was in fantasy team :(. Today is an important day for my fantasy teams, majority of my potential point scorers are playing and I badly need points :P.

Rosicky have pulled another marvelous goal for the Czechs in the second half, the goal which was always on cards after his initial shot was hit against the cross bar. Nedved sent a defense splitting pass and Rosicky just sprinted through and hit a beautiful shot to the lower right corner for his second and Czechs third. The look on USA’s coach told the whole story it looked as if he had given up in middle. And the tears in Nedved’s eyes were enough to tell how much he wanted to play in this World Cup, remember he came back from retirement to help his team qualify for the cup and now he is spearheading them in this event. Arsene Wenger must be delighted with his new signing Rosicky and boy what will happen when Henry and Rosicky combine, next year premier league will have some serious talent on display.

Next up is Italy and Ghana, sigh Azzurriiiiiiiiiiiiiii

Australia demolish Japan

Dream start by Australia, no goal in first 84 minutes and Three in next six, unbelievable stuff. Kewel and Viduka tried all day for an opening but it were the susbstitutions Tim Cahill and John Aloisi who did the damage. It was Cahill first who scored from the short range after a long throw was sent straight into the box. Japan panicked and went for the winner which gave Australia enough space to thumb in two more and kill the match. It seems the end for Japan unless they can come up with a miracle against Croatia. For Australia they everything to play for against Croats and can very well do so, next up is USA vs. Czech Republic.

First major conservational decision

A conservational decision by referee has given Japan a goal lead against Australia in a must win game for both. Goal happened in a bizarre way when Nakamura’s cross from right went straight into the goal but the replays showed that the Australian goalkeeper was knocked off balance right at the moment when he was about to clear it by not one but two Japanese players(unintentional but nevertheless). It sparked a huge protest from Socceroos but referee decided it was a goal (though only him and Japanese would say it was Goal). Though game is played in fast pace and lots of build ups but non being converted into a real chance and Australians have mostly been disappointing, specially with such high profile forward line. Lets see what they come up with in second half.

Angola Impressive but Portugal a lot to be desired

Portugal is the first team which was booed by its own supporters and there is a history to it. For centuries Angola was a colony of Portugal so although there was sense of harmony among the fans before the match but there was no shortage of rivalry. Angola were off to a shaky start and almost conceded a goal with first move of the play but Pauleta’s shot was inches wide of far post. This early warning wasn’t enough to wake up Angola, in 4th minute Luis Figo( even at the age of 33) showed great pace and went pass through Angola’s defender Jamba and provided a pass to Pauleta who this time converted the opportunity with ease 1-0 Portugal. At this time it looked like Portugal will have a goal fest and will run away with the match atleast that is what their spectators thought.

Angola started to gain some confidence and had couple of shots at goal. On the other end Cristiano Ronaldo was causing havoc with his speed and skills but wasn’t able to score. Twice he was unlucky though, once his powerful header hit the cross bar and then he brought up a wonderful save from the Angolan goalkeeper just before the end of first half.

Second half started bit slow but again was Portugal were more dominating though they were just able to create some half chances no real firepower was shown. But it was Angola who dominated mid second half specially Andre, Figueiredo and Mateus were very impressive. In 60th minute Luiz Scolari substituted Cristiano Ronaldo and winger didn’t look happy at all. Frankly this move took out the extra edge from Portuguese attack since Figo was largely ineffective in the second half. In the end it ended 1-0 though Portuguese were disappointing because they failed to convert positive looking build ups in to any clear cut goal scoring opportunities and will have to perform a lot better if they want to go through to the Quarters because in round of 16 they will be facing someone from Group C and we all know what fire power is there.

Today Azzurri began their campaign and as usual I am tensed and excited.

Disappointing Iran

Disappointing end to a match which promised a lot. Iran just seemed to lose their way in second half and were completely dominated by Mexico who I must say had a very inspiring game in the second half. Marquez Rafael their skipper was instrumental in Mexico’s performance in second half he was just every where and for Iran Ali Daei was disappointing he hardly created any impression. In the end Mexico was proved too strong for Iran who committed some horrendous errors in defense to give Mexico two late goals but really they paid for their defensive and no creative approach in second half and let Mexico dominate them.

Group D off to a flyer

Its half time at Franken-Stadion, with Iran 1 and Mexico 1. Both teams were in attacking mood from the beginning and match got off to a flying start with some quality end to end football. Iran were better off the two side with creating more chances and looked more fluid. But there passing accuracy desired a lot and their crosses were disappointing too which didn’t help their cause. Mexico took the lead in 28th minute from a set piece when Franco Guillermo found space in Iranian’s box and flicked the header to Omar Bravo who scored from short range.

Iranians came back strongly with Ali Karimi impressive as ever and six minutes later they got a corner and GolMohammadi yahya scored on a rebound. Crowd has been absolutely amazing in this match with both teams spectators in colorful outfits. Looking forward for another hot half.

Group C is Thriller Provider

This sure is a group of death, last night we witnessed one classic between Argentina and Ivory Coast and just now Netherlands and Serbia and Montenegro played another cracker. Started slowly with Dutch playing cautious and took full advantage of their opponent’s sit back strategy to keep possession and settle down. Serbia and Montenegro who are known for solid defense (their back four are known as “Fantastic Four”) were happy to sit back and let Dutch come forward and they relied on hitting on the counter. Their marking was absolutely fantastic and were so good in shutting any passing opportunity in their defense zone. Ironically the goal came when Van Persie Robin’s flick opened up a gap and Arjen Robben with great pace and control hit the ball past through Serbia’s goal keeper. Robben looked like he would score more with several well created opportunities and he looked far better than his partner Ruud Van Nistelrooij who didn’t have much to speak about this game.

With introduction of Koroman Ognjen late in first half gave Serbians more fire power at front and things looked quite differently in second half with Serbia and Montenegro coming up forward more but couldn’t take much advantage, plus they were very disappointing with their set pieces and gave Dutch way too many free kicks near their box. But what was impressive that in second half they changed their game and looked more positive on the other hand Dutch were more relying on counter attack and with never tiring legs of Robben they could have gone 2 nil up. Another in-form player for Dutch was Sneijder who was constantly running and hurrying Serbian’s defense on counter. This really sets up this group on fire and up coming matches would be one thriller, certainly the group to look out for.

In around 30 minutes time Iran will open their campaign against Mexico a match which everyone is expecting to be another thriller.

Argentina and Côte D'ivoire provided a killer

Ok we had another of a cracker what a match seems like night matches have more energy in them maybe its because of lack of heat or just my imagination. But some match it was, it had pace, creativity, breathtaking passes, resolute defending, total determination, never say die approach and some tough goal keeping. Ivory Coast must be ruing about the chances they missed plus they lacked creativity upfront or it was just good defending by Argentina. Whatever it was 13 shots with just 4 on goal and one converted is not a good ratio. Argentina on the other hand were more clinical in their approach they were breaking at the right time with right amount of pace in it and enough players to create some great chances. Riquelme was especially devastating with his precise passing and provided assists in both goals the last one being a killer through pass. Saviola who was preferred over Lionel Messi proved his coach’s decision correct with a well taken goal to give Argentina 2-0 lead.

For Cost Rica or Côte D'ivoire as they are like to be called, their midfield and forward line was very impressive in building up they were way too quick and precise only problem was they lacked creativity in penetrating the Argentinean’s defense and when they did they mostly blew it off. Their only goal came bit too late. Kalou and Didier Drogba were very impressive and it will be one hell of a game against Dutch.

Group B kicks off

Shock of the tournament so far Trinidad and Tobago the team with worst goal conceding record up to the built up of the tournament held out Sweden with one of the best goal scoring record in the Qualifiers. It is one surprise result it was Trinidad and Tobago’s debut match in the world cup and everyone expected a thrashing but no they somehow held on to nil nil even when for most of the second half they were down to ten men. Sweden on their part missed many chances and are themselves to be blamed for such a result but they look all good to advance to the next round. Too bad for me Ibrahimovic(another player in fantasy team) didn’t score hence I didn’t score any points sigh.

England on the other hand were disappointing in their game against Paraguay infact it was one crappy game, hardly had any rhythm even the goal scored by Beckham’s free kick which got deflected inside by Paraguay’s skipper wasn’t the best of goals. England will seriously need to change their tactics, though Lampard was impressive in attack but Gerrard who seemed more like again doing the holding job wasn’t involved much during attacks. Lets hope they get more creative in the midfield which in my view is one of the best among all.

Unlucky Poland

Poland have been real unlucky 2 posts now, this just a heart breaker....

Poland misery

Looks like Poland are going out of this tourney just after first match unless they salvage a point in last 10 minutes. And now just as I write Ecuador have scored another goal and this is the end for Poland unless they beat Germany in their next game. Ecuador scored first and since then are defending as if their holy city is under siege. Minute after minute waves and waves of Poland attack were on them but they stopped them like anything. Poland trying real hard but it doesn’t look like they will make it.

Ohhhhh hit against bar , not Poland's night will they have luck against Germany?

Dream Start

A blasting start to the World Cup, you cannot ask for more than this, already six goals in first match, it is a highest aggregate ever. Match was full of action and very highly paced a perfect start to the world cup.

The hosts got off to a flying start when Philip Lahm’s 6th minute powerful shot hit the inside of bar and went in, Germany 1-0. But Costa Rica hit back in 12th minute when a through pass cut Germany’s defense in two and set up Paolo Wanchope to score his first and equalize. Klose got Germany ahead in 17th minute with some excellent work from Schweinsteiger. Germany were fluent with their attack coming from both sides and crossing well but their defense lacked the control infact Costa Rica’s defense looked more solid and organized.

Second half started slow but suddenly burst into action when thanks to sloppy defending from Costa Rica allowed Klose to head a cross which was saved by the goalkeeper but he was there to put the rebound into the net, 3-1 Germany. But just after 12 minutes, Germany’s defense was against found wanting another through pass and again Wanchope was there to guide it in.

On 87th minute Torsten Frings scored a stunning 30 yard goal to end any hope of Costa Rica of comeback. It could well be tournaments one of the best goal.

For me Germany’s defense needs to improve a lot if they want to progress in this competition, far too many times it got wide open for through passes. But their midfield was too awesome all four had an amazing game and when Ballack comes back it will be even better. Klose just seems to love opening game of World Cup remember how he annihilated Saudia Arabia in previous cup.

Costa Rica well I hardly see them passing through the second round the other two teams look quite good but then you never know it’s a crazy game ;).

Good news for England but will Rooney make a difference?

So its good news for England, Wayne Rooney has joined English squad in Germany though there are concerns and questions hanging on when he will be match fit to eventually play in tourney. It is certain that he will not be able to play in any group matches unless in last game against Sweden (June 20th ) England require a must win result to qualify so may be then Sven Goran Eriksson might call him as late substitute. Otherwise United have laid down strict fitness conditions on his playing in tourney. It all seems like a battle between English team management and United management. Sven Goran Eriksson definitely needs Rooney in team one to keep his team’s moral high and secondly to probably use him late in games. Because coming back from such an injury there is a huge risk playing him even one full half especially when opposition’s defense would be targeting his leg. United on the other hand cannot afford him getting injured again because that will put him off for months and seriously jeopardize United’s campaign next season.

Rooney’s injury reminds me of the injury suffered by Waqar Younis just before the 92 Cricket World Cup in Australia. Waqar was at his peak at that time and losing him was a huge blow to the squad but full praise to Imran Khan who marshaled his troops and likes of Wasim Akram, Aaqib Javed and Mushtaq Ahmed who stepped up their games and rest we know is history :). Rest of the English players will have to do that too.

There are bad news for other teams though most importantly for France who lost Djibril Cisse yesterday(Lyon striker Sidney Govou will replace him now), when he suffered a leg fracture while playing in a friendly against China. Friendly or warm up games are important for teams trying to find out right combinations and test strategies but it can all seriously go wrong if any of the main players get injured and are ruled out as France coach Raymond Domenech found it yesterday plus it is such a heart break for a player going out of tourney a day before. In this case Brazil looks such a settled side they don’t have any injury scares and they hardly played any friendlies which goes to show how much settled everything is with them and that just makes them such a big favorites to win this time again.

There is a slight setback for hosts too, they will be without their charismatic captain Michael Ballack in their opening game against Costa Rica. It is also a sad news for me too because he is in my fantasy team which I am playing on official World Cup site and now there isn’t anyone from my team playing on the opening day :( sad.

For Italy it seems there is no end to their ever growing injury list, Totti isn’t completely match fit( which just emphasizes the fact that how much time it takes to recover and then get match fit) and after Gianluca Zambrotta and Alessandro Nesta it was time for Gennaro Gattuso to pick up an injury and he is probably out for first two matches.

Also Mexico’s first choice goal keeper Oswaldo Sanchez has returned home following death of his father, a statement is expected later this evening about his status.

And it all begins tomorrow :).

Two Days

Just a wait of another Two Days and then the world’s biggest sporting event shall begin. After a disappointing 2002 World Cup(not for Brazilian team fans or Turkish maybe) I am expecting this one to be a lot more exciting and hopefully we shall see loads of goals and some really classic matches with few upsets in middle.

This time around I have decided not to keep my emotions and opinions just to my TV room, infect I will be blogging them :P. It is all inspired by a wonderful blog started by two very good friends of mine which is all about what is going in the world of Tennis. I am seriously hoping I can make them write here too it will be just great.

Coming to World cup the biggest news today will be the result Wayne Rooney’s scan and will doctors advice him to play or withdraw? I would seriously love to see him play, he is one exciting player and can be a huge hit among fans but I am not sure how much impact he would have coming right after an injury. And if he withdraws then it will be one heart breaker. Though even without him England is pretty strong team just look at some of the names

I mean just look at these names, this is a pretty good squad and I hope they do well this time.
